At a Tokyo-held press conference, Sony unveiled models of two tablet devices that are currently in the developmental process. The first model tablet, which has been labelled ‘S1’ for the time being, specializes in providing high-end media entertainment, while the other one titled ‘S2’ will be more focused on mobile communication.

The tablets, which employ the Android 3.0 OS, are WAN (3G/4G) and Wi-Fi-compatible, and are capable of providing the users with basic internet browsing and emailing facilities, along with easy access to entertainment content found on Sony’s network.

Equipped with two 5.5-inch wide screens, prototype S2 has a clamshell-like design, which can be folded for increased portability. Its double screen feature can also be used as two separate viewing interfaces.

While S1 has a single 9.4-inch wide screen, it more than makes up for this deficiency through its brand new universal remote control feature that can be used on all A/V products through infrared technology. Moreover, their DLNA functionality allows the users to view and listen to their multimedia content on TVs and wireless speakers.

Since the April 2010 launch of Apple iPad, tablets have become one of the fastest growing devices of the mobile computing industry. Many other electronics giants like Samsung, HP and Motorola have now entered into the tablet fray to emulate Apple’s success, with Sony next in line.

The Japanese conglomerate plans on releasing both the tablet models before the end of the current year.
